What To Expect From Disney During Super Bowl LVII
People are anticipating the commercials during Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, particularly the TV spots for all of the upcoming major event movies and shows. Historically, Disney has had a significant role in the broadcast of this event. With so many new releases on the horizon that haven’t received much attention, we thought it would be useful to compile a list of the ones that are most likely to make their debut soon.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
The next weekend sees the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and while fans may see the advertising as unnecessary or redundant, Disney would be foolish not to capitalise on the many pairs of eyes that will be glued to the big game. Instead of a new trailer, we’re hoping for a clip or a longer version of the current spot with some brand new footage. It’s more of a last-ditch effort than an advertisement. If you want to learn more about the film, check back early next week for our review.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
The conclusion to James Gunn’s Guardians trilogy is one of the most anticipated movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year. True, and it’s easy to understand why. The release of this sequel has been delayed for a long time due to a variety of factors, including Gunn’s dismissal and subsequent hiring. A teaser trailer released two months ago hinted that a main character might die, indicating a darker tone. With only about three months until the film’s theatrical release, we believe Marvel would be wise to release another teaser trailer with new footage for fans to dissect.
The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid remake starring Halle Bailey, directed by Rob Marshall, is the most certain to be shown on Sunday. It wouldn’t surprise me if they released the first full trailer, complete with glimpses of Melissa McCarthy’s Ursula, live-action Sebastian and Flounder, and Bailey’s visuals and vocals. The trailer was accidentally leaked onto Twitter a few weeks ago before being quickly removed. Many people interpreted this as a sign that the official trailer would be released soon by Disney. That has not yet occurred. One reason this hasn’t happened yet is that the Studio has already paid for a prime viewing location for Sunday’s game.
Elemental
This, like the previous two, is a no-brainer. Given that it is Disney’s only Pixar film scheduled for release this year (at least in theatres), and that it is coming soon. We can assume that Disney wants to generate as much excitement for this Pixar film as possible because its previous one was not a financial success. Given that the film’s trailer has already been released, a new, longer commercial for it could air during the game. There’s no doubt that we’d all love to see a full trailer, but we expect Disney to hold off for a little longer.
Secret Invasion
Secret Invasion, as the name suggests, is shrouded in mystery. So much so that we have no idea when it will be released. Only the first trailer, which debuted at D23, and the release date this year are confirmed. Could this Sunday’s sporting event be the ideal setting for a release date announcement? At least, that’s what we’ve come to believe. Disney+ debuted a trailer for all of its upcoming shows during the Super Bowl a few years ago. There won’t be any new Marvel content for three months after the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania next week, so we’re hoping for something along those lines. There is a gap that must be filled.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Following the disappointment that was Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, fans are both excited and sceptical about Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (myself included). Nonetheless, the first trailer put many people at ease. With the film’s release date still four months away, there’s a chance we won’t see any new Indiana Jones footage on Sunday. Even so, with such a massive franchise, one of the most anticipated films of the Summer, and Ford’s final performance as the character, it seems like a no-brainer to use the Super Bowl to build even more hype.
The Marvels
Many people have flown under the radar with The Marvels. The film is a sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), WandaVision (2020), and Ms. Marvel (2018,) and will feature Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan working together to defeat an intergalactic threat for the first time in the MCU. Despite the fact that it isn’t set to be released until the end of the year, Disney may take advantage of this opportunity to give audiences their first look at the film.
Peter Pan & Wendy
If we don’t get a new sizzle reel for Disney’s upcoming live-action Peter Pan remake, Peter Pan & Wendy, on Sunday, we might get our first extended look at the film. This is another entirely hypothetical analysis because the film has yet to receive a firm release date. While we were hoping it would be released before The Little Mermaid, the lack of information has led us to believe that Disney is holding it back until the second half of 2023. Again, this is all speculative.
