Alanis Morissette responded late Monday (Nov. 7) to “misinformed rumblings” over her absence from Saturday’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, saying she has no need to “spend time in an environment that degrades women” at this stage in her career.

Morissette was listed as singing “You’re So Vain” with Olivia Rodrigo in honour to Rock Hall inductee Carly Simon at the ceremony in an early event summary seen by Billboard, but her name wasn’t on the final set list. According to Page Six, Morissette practised the duet with Rodrigo on Friday, but the 19-year-old pop sensation ended up performing the song on her own.

Morissette opened her statement Monday by expressing her admiration for Simon, Rodrigo, and the other ladies performing on Saturday’s lineup, but she noted that she had “sucked it up on more occasions than I can count” and wasn’t willing to do it again.

“I have spent decades in an industry rife with an overarching anti-woman sentiment and have tolerated a lot of condescension and disrespectfulness, reduction, dismissiveness, contract-breaching, unsupportiveness, exploitation and psychological violence (and more) throughout my career,” Morissette wrote on Instagram. “I tolerated it since nothing could keep me from connecting with individuals I cared about and with whom I resonated.” I live to serve and connect with others, and I’ve sucked it up on more instances than I can count over the years to do so. It’s difficult not to be touched by any industry in the world, but Hollywood is known for its mistreatment of the feminine in all of us.

“Fortunately, I am at a stage in my life where I no longer need to spend time in an environment that devalues women.”

Morissette’s participation had not been revealed before to the event, which will air on HBO later this month. At press time, no one from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had responded to Billboard’s request for comment.

Simon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, alongside Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Dolly Parton, and Lionel Richie. Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were inducted for musical brilliance; Harry Belafonte and Elizabeth Cotten were inducted for early influence; and Allen Grubman, Jimmy Iovine, and Sylvia Robinson were inducted for the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
