Ari Lennox Discusses Her New Album ‘Age/Sex/Location’ And Her Relationship With Summer Walker
Ari Lennox prioritises herself. After achieving incredible success with the project’s first single and Hot 100 hit, “Pressure,” the DMV native released her sophomore album, age/sex/location, last month. The 12-track collection highlights Lennox’s liberating journey to self-care and is a captivating listen for R&B fans and hopeless romantics.
Lennox admits that her endless attempts at romance diverted her attention away from the true love of her life: herself. “First and foremost, it’s about moving with intention and being more aware of what you’re doing, rather than just aimlessly, mindlessly moving around,” she explains. Songs like “POF” and “Waste My Time” depict a revitalised Lennox investing more in herself and learning to be more accountable on the dating scene. “I’m also aware that there’s a lot going on inside,” she says matter-of-factly, “which would draw me to red flags or bad dates.” “I understand that “POF” does not have a lot of accountability.”
After releasing her critically acclaimed debut album, Shea Butter Baby, in 2019, Lennox has emerged as a surefire R&B and soul star alongside her sister-in-arms, Summer Walker. The vivacious duo first collaborated on Walker’s 2021 single “Unloyal” before reuniting on Lennox’s latest single, “Queen Space.”
“That girl is Summer,” Lennox says. “Summer works in IT.” She is phenomenal in modern R&B. [She is] literally and phenomenally leading. I’m just grateful that she has always shown me love. We contacted her, and ‘Queen Space’ felt incomplete until Summer sent in that verse. It altered my life. Cole came in and assisted me in adding a beautiful pre-chorus that wasn’t there before, making me fall in love with the record all over again.”
