At The 2022 BMI London Awards, Ed Sheeran And Johnny McDaid Win European Song Of The Year.

At the 2022 BMI London Awards, Ed Sheeran and Johnny McDaid received the European song of the year award for their global hit “Bad Habits.” On Monday, the private event was held at London’s Savoy Hotel (Oct. 3).

The award is given to BMI’s most performed song of the previous year by writers from the United Kingdom or Europe. The single topped the Official UK Singles Chart for 11 weeks in a row.

Sheeran accepted the award via video message, saying, “We had so much fun making the song, and it’s been so much fun playing the song out on the road and seeing the reactions of people all over Europe, and I can’t wait to go out and do some more.”

“Ed, I’m so grateful, man, for the fact that you still trust me to make music with you after over a decade of us writing songs together, and I hope we have many more to come,” McDaid said as he accepted alongside Sheeran.

Sheeran won the award in 2016, 2017, and 2018. The 2018 award was given to him for “Shape of You,” which he co-wrote with McDaid.

This year, Sheeran was also honoured with several other BMI London Awards, including 4 million performances of “I Don’t Care” and 5 million performances of “Perfect.” He was also recognised in the pop songs category for “Afterglow,” which he co-wrote with David Hodges, and “Shivers,” which he co-wrote with McDaid and Kal Lavelle.

Ellie Goulding received the BMI President’s Award. Tems, a global breakout star, received the BMI Impact Award. Both awards had previously been announced.

BMI president and CEO Mike O’Neill presented the award to Goulding. “I’ve never won anything like this before, and it means a lot to me,” she explained. “I moved out of my house when I was 16, and that’s when I started.” And I felt I had so much to lose by trying to make a living doing something that everyone said was impossible. It’s sort of ingrained in the UK, especially as a woman, that ambition is a bad thing and not very cool, but it shouldn’t be. Ambition is an essential ingredient for what we all do, and along with talent and a little luck, it’s essential for anyone who hopes of a long-lasting career, in a really tough industry actually, so to anyone on their way there, please don’t listen to those who have anything to say about you wanting bigger and better because you deserve it. In a world that requires immediate action, in a country that requires empathy, may music play a role in empowering others to begin.”

Goulding was accompanied by a pianist and backing vocalists as she performed her singles “Woman” and “New Heights” from her 2020 album Brightest Blue.

Tems said simply, “I just wanted to say thank you,” after receiving the BMI Impact Award. Thank you for this honour… “I’ve come a long way, and I’m thankful.”

Among the numerous Million-Air awards given out throughout the evening were Tom Barnes and Sam Roman for 4 million performances of Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved,” and Sam Smith and Normani for “Dancing With a Stranger.” Stig Anderson, Benny Andersson, and Björn Ulvaeus were honoured for “Dancing Queen,” as performed by ABBA, with 6 million performances. Elton John received three BMI London Awards: one for 7 million performances of “Rocket Man,” one for 6 million performances of “Tiny Dancer,” and one for “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix),” co-written with Andrew Meecham and Dean Meredith.

O’Neill and Shirin Foroutan, BMI’s vice president, creative, Europe, hosted the event.

Along with the BMI President’s Award, BMI Impact Award, Million-Air Awards, and European Song of the Year, the ceremony also included awards for pop, dance, film, television, cable, and streaming. The complete list of 2022 winners will be available here soon.
