Bazzi Discusses Label Hiring A Private Investigator For ‘Heaven’ Sample, Co-Writing K-Pop Songs, And Other Topics
Bazzi recently released his sophomore album Infinite Dream, and he spoke with Billboard News’ Tetris Kelly about the inspiration behind the album’s fittingly dreamy lead single “Heaven.”
“It’s really cool,” Bazzi said of the positive response to the song. “‘Heaven’ was created over two years ago. It’s always interesting when I’ve listened to a song hundreds of times in preparation, production, and finishing — and then fresh ears hear it and I get to feel like I’m listening to it for the first time again.”
In addition to his own musical projects, Bazzi has co-written songs for K-pop artists such as NCT Dream’s “We Go Up” and EXO’s “Love Shot.” “Not many people realise it, but Korea saved my life in a way,” he explained. “Up until that point, I hadn’t made a single dollar in music, and my father was driving Lyft for me so I could stay in LA and go to the studio.” He was looking after us and paying the bills so I could pursue my dream. Something happened to my father, and he was no longer able to drive.”
“Four days later, I got an opportunity to go to South Korea and write at SM Entertainment,” he continued. That first trip, I placed nine songs and got a publishing deal, which allowed us to — I would have had to move.”
