Britain Signs £4 Billion Deal To Build Advanced Attack Submarines
In a significant development for the British Navy, the United Kingdom has officially signed a £4 billion deal to manufacture state-of-the-art attack submarines. This groundbreaking initiative is set to propel the British Navy into a new era of maritime warfare capabilities.
Collaborative Effort with Leading British Businesses
Defence Minister Grant Shapps has announced that the UK has entered into contracts with prominent British enterprises to spearhead this transformative project. These contracts aim to pave the way for the development of the most formidable attack submarines ever operated by the British Navy.
BAE Systems Secures Contract for AUKUS Programme
The UK government has entrusted BAE Systems with a £4 billion contract, as part of the AUKUS programme. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with Australia and the United States, seeks to build advanced attack submarines. The contract was jointly confirmed by Minister Shapps and BAE Systems.
Funding Allocated for Development Work
BAE Systems disclosed that the Ministry of Defence has allocated £3.95 billion in funding, covering development work until 2028. This financial support will enable BAE Systems to commence detailed design work on these cutting-edge submarines.
AUKUS Initiative’s Strategic Significance
Defence Minister Shapps emphasized the strategic importance of these submarines, stating, “Our ultimate national insurance is, of course, our at-sea nuclear deterrent.” He further revealed that contracts with leading British companies have been signed to advance the development of these submarines, marking a significant milestone for national security.
Counteracting China’s Influence in the Indo-Pacific
This monumental investment in the AUKUS submarine programme aims to bolster the UK’s long-term hunter-killer submarine capabilities. It is a critical response to regional dynamics, particularly in light of China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
Timeline and Future Prospects
The construction of these advanced submarines is slated to commence towards the end of this decade, with the first SSN-AUKUS boat expected to be delivered in the late 2030s, as indicated by BAE Systems. Notably, design work began in 2021, and the allocated funding covers development activities until 2028.
Boosting Employment and Infrastructure
Aside from advancing military capabilities, this substantial investment will also facilitate significant infrastructure development at BAE Systems’ site in Barrow-in-Furness. It will also contribute to strengthening the supply chain and creating more than 5,000 job opportunities.
CEO Charles Woodburn Expresses Support
BAE Systems’ Chief Executive, Charles Woodburn, welcomed the funding and stated, “This funding reinforces the government’s support to our UK submarine enterprise and allows us to mature the design and invest in critical skills and infrastructure to support our long-term national security.”
Expanding the Workforce
The UK’s submarine programs are expected to employ 12,500 people by the end of this year, including approximately 900 apprentices and graduates, further underscoring the economic and employment benefits of this initiative.
