Bruce Willis’ Family Announces Progression Of His Dementia Diagnosis
According to his family’s announcement on Thursday, Bruce Willis’ diagnosis of aphasia last spring has progressed to dementia.
Willis, in particular, suffers from frontotemporal dementia, a form of the disease that can cause speech and writing difficulties.
According to Bruce’s loved ones, “difficulties with communication are unfortunately just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces.” “While this hurts, knowing what’s wrong with me is a relief at last.”
Last year, Willis’s family announced that the actor would retire from his long-running career due to cognitive decline.
The symptoms of frontotemporal dementia
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is one of several types of dementia that causes nerve damage in the frontal and temporal lobes, resulting in a loss of function in those areas.
Frontotemporal dementia comes in a variety of forms. Nerve death in the brain regions responsible for empathy, judgement, and behaviour is a hallmark of behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia.
Affected individuals with primary progressive aphasia experience a decline in brain regions responsible for language production and comprehension. Symptoms usually appear before age 65, but can appear at any age.
Also like Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), FTD can cause difficulties with motor skills and movement.
So, how does FTD differ from Alzheimer’s disease?
In contrast to Alzheimer’s disease, which is typically diagnosed in older adults, FTD is typically identified in those in their forties and fifties. Hallucinations, memory loss, and problems with spatial orientation, like getting lost, are all more closely associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Diagnosis and treatment
To diagnose FTD, doctors use MRIs and other brain imaging techniques. When combined with the patient’s medical history and current symptoms, the findings provide valuable insight. There are no known risk factors for frontotemporal degeneration, but about 30 percent of those who have it have a family history of the disorder.
Although symptom relief medication is available, the disease worsens over time.
