Dennis Rodman Says Bulls Would Beat Heat In Hypothetical Matchup
Star-studded trios have been a significant part of the NBA for many years. However, the “Big 3” era was propelled to the forefront by LeBron James in 2010, when he teamed up with fellow All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat, forming a lethal trio that went on to four consecutive NBA Finals, capturing two championships.
Another team featuring a “Big 3” was the iconic Chicago Bulls from the 1990s, boasting the formidable combination of Dennis Rodman, Michael Jordan, and Scottie Pippen. This formidable squad enjoyed immense success, achieving a then-record of 72 wins in 1996 and securing three consecutive NBA titles.
Rodman’s Bold Assertion
When asked to imagine a showdown between these two legendary trios, Dennis Rodman didn’t hesitate to declare his confidence in the Chicago Bulls’ triumph. The outspoken forward boldly claimed that it would be a “no-contest,” firmly believing in the superiority of his former team.
“It would be a no-contest,” Rodman confidently asserted.
Defensive Prowess vs. Offensive Talent
While acknowledging the offensive prowess of the Miami Heat’s star trio—LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh—Rodman emphasized that the Chicago Bulls held the advantage in defensive ability and overall experience.
“We may not have had the same level of offensive talent as the Heat, but we had smarter players. When it comes to matching up with the Heat, that’s easy,” Rodman shared.
The Unmatched Defensive Legacy
One aspect often overlooked in the greatness of the Chicago Bulls of the ’90s was their stifling and relentless defense. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Ron Harper were all incredibly active defenders, causing trouble for opposing teams. Dennis Rodman, in particular, was a defensive stalwart, often likened to a walking brick wall, capable of shutting down even the most formidable opponents.
“I would take Bosh out of his damn game easy,” Rodman added, displaying his confidence in the Bulls’ defensive prowess. “How would Dwyane Wade match up with Scottie Pippen? Really? Scottie Pippen would guard LeBron easy. And Michael Jordan, how could you cover those two guys there?”
The Dominance of His Airness
Additionally, Rodman alluded to the belief that in today’s NBA, where the rules lean heavily towards offense, Michael Jordan would be even more dominant. He predicted that if Jordan were playing at 28 years old in the present era, he would likely average an astonishing 40 points per game, if not more.
“It’s not hard to envision His Airness completely dominating, given how he shredded more physical defenses in his prime. Plus, Jordan’s legendary competitive fire would give him an edge, no matter the rules or era,” Rodman pointed out.
