Do You Get Deja Vu? Olivia Rodrigo And Billy Joel Perform At Madison Square Garden
Olivia Rodrigo credits herself in her song “Deja Vu” with introducing Billy Joel’s music to the song’s protagonist, and the two are now performing together.
Fans were surprised when the 19-year-old pop star joined Joel onstage at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Wednesday night (August 24) to perform two songs with him: her 2021 Billboard Hot 100 top five hit “Deja Vu” and Joel’s “Uptown Girl,” which she samples in her song.
“Hey, guys!” he exclaimed cheerfully. Rodrigo exclaimed in front of the yelling crowd. Please accept my gratitude, Billy. This is a very enthusiastic supporter. In addition, before performing “Deja Vu,” she stated, “I kind of wrote this next song about you.”
“I’ll bet she knows Billy Joel ’cause you played her ‘Uptown Girl,'” Rodrigo says, referring to Joel’s 1983 hit. and “Play her piano, but she has no idea that I taught you Billy Joel.”

The single “Uptown Girl,” released on November 12, 1983, and featuring a music video starring Christie Brinkley, the singer’s wife from 1985 to 1994, spent five weeks at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
This week at Madison Square Garden has been extremely hectic in preparation for Harry Styles’ 15-show residency, which begins on Saturday night. Joel thanked the pop star for taking a night off during his show on Wednesday, mentioning his recent tour dates: “Thank you to Harry Styles for taking a night off.”
