Dylan Conrique Discusses Working With Max Martin and the Success Of “Birthday Cake”: ‘That Song Completely Changed My Life,’ Says One.
Dylan Conrique’s viral hit “Birthday Cake” has surpassed 100 million streams. The 18-year-old spoke with Billboard News’ Tetris Kelly about the emotional track and what’s next.
She went on to say that she was initially concerned that “Birthday Cake” was “too specific” because she wrote it for her best friend, who was grieving the loss of her mother. “Seeing the impact it has had on people’s lives has been incredible,” she continued.
Conrique stated that she has “constantly been writing” and that she has noticed an intriguing pattern in her forthcoming publications. “I realised that the music that is currently being released is literally the story of a relationship breakup if you put it in the right order,” she explained. “I’m thinking about doing something where other people rank their own breakups in order of severity. They can tell their own story.”
The rising teen star also talked about working with legendary producer and songwriter Max Martin. When he walked in, he asked, ‘Can I help you with the song?’ “I couldn’t think of anything to say,” she recalled. “‘OK, let me hear it,’ he said. Oh no, I exclaimed, we don’t have any recordings of the song. ‘Oh, just sing it for me,’ he said, and I was like [gasp]. I was so nervous!”
Working with Martin and other songwriters has greatly aided her “growth,” she concluded.
