With the announcement on Tuesday, September 20 that Miles Teller and Kendrick Lamar will be the host and musical guest, respectively, of Saturday Night Live’s Season 48 opening episode on October 1, we decided to look back to see who got those coveted bookings on the first episodes of every previous season.
Viewers frequently go out of their way to see the first episode of a season. As a result, producers go all out to kick off the season with a bang. That means bringing in a hot host and a musical guest for SNL.

On October 11, 1975, the first episode was hosted by legendary comedian George Carlin. That night’s musical guests were Billy Preston and Janis Ian, both of whom had recent Billboard Hot 100 hits.
Steve Martin has hosted the most season-openers, with four. Tom Hanks is the runner-up, having hosted two season-openers.
Kanye West has appeared as a musical guest on three season openers, more than any other artist. Keith Richards, John Mayer, and The Weeknd should also be mentioned.
