Grimes Introduces Elf.Tech AI Voice-Mimicking Software For Fans
Canadian musician and producer Grimes has announced the launch of her own AI voice mimicking software, Elf.Tech. The platform will enable fans to record and release music using Grimes’ voice, with the artist encouraging users to “take advantage” of the Grimes intellectual property.
Beta Testing Phase
The platform is currently in its beta testing phase, and users can upload their voice singing or record directly into the app to receive an output of their audio in Grimes’ voice. The app also has the capability to collect master recording royalties for users if they distribute their songs through Elf.Tech, and Grimes has requested a 50% split on these royalties in exchange for a Grimes feature and distribution.
Release of New Music
Along with the announcement of Elf.Tech, Grimes also confirmed that she will be releasing new music in the coming weeks and months. Two upcoming albums, ‘Music For Machines’ and ‘I Wanna Be Software,’ were also mentioned, although release dates are yet to be revealed.
Conditions for Takedown
Grimes outlined several conditions under which tracks on Elf.Tech might be taken down, stating that she may only take action in cases of “rly rly toxic lyrics” with her voice. Grimes encouraged users to “try not to exit the current Overton window of lyrical content with regards to sex/violence,” and requested that “no baby murder songs” be uploaded to the platform.
Speaking Out Against Gatekeeping and Copyright
In a keynote speech delivered at the annual International Music Summit in Ibiza, Grimes spoke out against gatekeeping in the music industry and criticized copyright laws. She expressed her belief that there is “way too much gatekeeping in music,” and that the industry has been “defined by lawyers, and that strangles creativity.”
Parting Ways with Columbia Records
Grimes recently announced her departure from Columbia Records, with whom she had been signed since March 2021. She cited a desire for more creative freedom and the ability to self-release music as the reason for the split.
Overall, Grimes’ Elf.Tech platform represents a significant development in AI music creation and demonstrates the artist’s commitment to pushing creative boundaries in the music industry.
