‘I Knew His Gifts Were Undeniable,’ Dr. Dre says Of Eminem’s Induction Into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted its 2022 class in dramatic style on Saturday night (Nov. 5). Dolly Parton, Eminem, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Lionel Richie, and Carly Simon were among those inducted. Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis will also be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the “prize for musical excellence.”
Dr. Dre, Eminem’s longtime friend and colleague, had the honour of inducting him, recounting the first time Jimmy Iovine called to inform him that Eminem was a white dude. “That completely f—ed me up,” Dre laughed.
He went on to describe how practically everyone tried to talk him out of working with the then-unknown rapper, claiming that no one believed or saw the vision. “I knew his gifts were unquestionable,” Dre said. “We were both what the other needed — and I was willing to stake my entire career on it.”
Eminem, as Dre put it, “introduced hip-hop to middle America.” As a result, he became one of music’s best-selling and most recognised rappers, as proven by the Rock Hall video montage, which included footage from Adele, Elton John, Rihanna, and others applauding his unrivalled abilities.
There could only be one way to follow such a meaty induction: with an even meatier performance. Em did exactly that, tearing through favourites like “My Name Is,” “Forever,” “Not Afraid,” and more – with unexpected guests ranging from Steven Tyler to Ed Sheeran.
“I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” Eminem stated after his act. “First, I’m a rapper; second, I almost died from an overdose; and third, I had to fight my way through… “I’m a high school dropout who studied hip hop.”
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will air on HBO on November 19.
