In A Contentious Tweet, M.I.A. Compares Alex Jones’ Sandy Hook Lies To Celebrity Vaccination PSAs.
M.I.A. is stirring up controversy once more with a tweet that reiterates her opposition to vaccinations.
The seasoned British rapper and singer (real name Mathangi Arulpragasam) voiced his opinion regarding the settlement Infowars host Alex Jones was ordered to pay to the Sandy Hook victims’ families.
This week, a Connecticut court fined the right-wing commentator $965 million payable for repeatedly making false claims that actors staged the 2012 massacre as part of a plot to take away Americans’ firearms.
The majority of the medical community disagrees with M.I.A.’s statements, which come just before the release of MATA, her sixth studio album and first to be released through Island Records as part of a recently announced global deal.
The hip-hop performer has always marched to her own beat. On February 5, 2012, while Madonna was performing at the Super Bowl, she extended her middle finger, which put her in a fight with the NFL that would take three years to be resolved.
She has fought along the way with her label (Interscope), the Grammys, other musicians, and more.
The rapper commented on social media during the March 2020 coronavirus outbreak, saying, “If I have to choose the vaccine or chip, I’m going to choose death.”
The rapper replied, “Yeah in America they made me [vaccinate] my child before the school admission,” when a fan called her out for being a “anti vaxxer.” The hardest part was that. being a mother and not having any say in this. I don’t ever want to experience that. He was so sick for three weeks that doctors had to give him antibiotics to bring down his fever from three vaccinations.
Next year, M.I.A. will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Arular, her debut album that was nominated for a Mercury Prize. She has amassed a string of top 10 hits in the US, including “Paper Planes,” “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” on which she collaborated with Madonna, and Travis Scott’s “Franchise,” which she performed alongside Young Thug.
She received an MBE in 2019 for her contributions to music.
