In The First Trailer For ‘Confess, Fletch,’ Jon Hamm Struggles To Find A Break.
Irwin “Fletch” Fleming as played by Jon Hamm Fletcher may not be in the mood for a steak sandwich or a steak sandwich, but he has a history of bungling criminal investigations.
The first trailer for Confess, Fletch resurrects the title character, who was created in a series of novels by author Gregory Mcdonald and became part of 1980s pop culture lore with the Chevy Chase-starring Fletch (1985) and its sequel four years later. The new Miramax film will be released in theatres, digitally, and on-demand on September 16.
After several failed attempts to bring the character back to the big screen over the years, Hamm stars in director Greg Mottola’s comedy based on the same-named Mcdonald book. The cast also includes Roy Wood Jr., Annie Mumolo, Ayden Mayeri, Lorenza Izzo, Kyle MacLachlan, and Marcia Gay Harden, Hamm’s former Mad Men co-star.
As seen in the first trailer, Confess, Fletch revolves around the titular character becoming a suspect in a murder case in Europe while attempting to locate missing artwork. Throughout the process, Fletch suffers a series of mishaps, including being punched in the face and clumsily dropping a gun over the side of a boat.
“I was an investigative reporter,” Fletch, played by Hamm, explains at one point. “It’s an occupation that, like president, has been devalued by the digital age.”
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2020, Hamm stated that he admired Chase’s version and had no intention of imitating it. Fletch telling a server, “I’ll have a Bloody Mary and a steak sandwich and a steak sandwich,” was a popular line in the original 1985 film.
“The character in the book is a lot different than Chevy’s portrayal,” the star explained at the time. “So when Bill Block at Miramax came to me and said, ‘You know, we own this and we think you’d be a good fit,’ I agreed, but I don’t want to imitate Chevy.” “I’m not interested, and I don’t think anyone else is either.” We already have that version, so perhaps there’s a way to get a version that’s more true to the book’s sensibility, more intellectual, and a little more live.”
