Kelly Clarkson Secures Dual Victory At 2023 Daytime Emmys
Kelly Clarkson and her acclaimed daytime talk show continued their victorious streaks at the 2023 Daytime Emmy Awards, broadcast live on CBS on Friday, Dec. 15. The delay in the originally announced airdate of June 16 was due to strikes by Hollywood writers and actors. Despite the setbacks, the show prevailed after the nominations were revealed on April 26.
Dominance in Two Categories
Clarkson clinched the award for daytime talk series host, a remarkable feat considering the combined competition of “informative” and “entertainment” hosts this year. Notably, she had previously secured outstanding entertainment talk show host for the past three years. The Kelly Clarkson Show also emerged as the outstanding daytime talk series, outshining both “informative” and “entertainment” series, including returning nominees and a first-time nominee.
An Impressive Record
With this latest triumph, Kelly Clarkson has amassed seven Daytime Emmys within the first four seasons of her talk show. This achievement surpasses her three Grammy Awards earned over a much longer span of 21 years. As she stands nominated for another Grammy at the upcoming Feb. 4 ceremony, the competition with Adele for the most wins in the best pop vocal album category remains tight.
Absence and Industry Support
For the second consecutive year, Clarkson was not physically present to accept her awards. The question arises: should she make an appearance to demonstrate support for the industry and the awards show that has been instrumental in recognizing her talent? The probability seems high.
Ceremony Highlights and Tributes
The 50th Annual Daytime Emmys, hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner, paid tribute to industry legends during the In Memoriam segment. Susan Lucci received a lifetime achievement award, acknowledging her perseverance after 18 previous losses before winning. Additionally, Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray, whose long-running talk shows concluded this season, were honored.
Acknowledging Contributions
The ceremony recognized individuals with significant contributions to the industry. Tanya Hart and Al Schwartz were ushered into the Academy’s Gold Circle, honoring their 50 years of accomplishment. The awards, presented at the national level for the first time, were handed out by tabloid talk show veteran Maury Povich.
A Shift in Emmy Awards Organization
Since 1974, the Daytime Emmy Awards have acknowledged excellence in television programming and crafts. Notably, plans were announced in 2021 to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards based on content genre rather than program airtime.
Behind the Scenes
The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were produced by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI), with executive producers Adam Sharp, Lisa Armstrong (NATAS), and David McKenzie (ATI).
Unusual Scheduling
In a departure from convention, The Daytime Creative Arts and Lifestyle Emmy ceremony will stream live on Saturday, Dec. 16, the day after the main telecast. This event will be held at the Westin Bonaventure and can be viewed at Watch.TheEmmys.TV and via The Emmys apps.
