Kevin Parker Celebrates 10 Years Of ‘Lonerism’ By Tame Impala: I Felt Liberated To Be Ambitious, Strange, Pop, And Experimental.
A lifetime of ten years passes in the blink of an eye. Just ask Kevin Parker, the man behind Tame Impala’s production.
This week a decade ago, the Australian creative genius released his sophomore full-length album, Lonerism (via Modular Recordings). And everything changed from then on.
Parker is taking a trip down memory lane today, pulling memories and photos from the vault.
Today marks the tenth anniversary of Lonerism. “It’s difficult to put into words what the album means to me right now,” he writes on Instagram. “It was a pretty special time for me when I was making the music (it wasn’t yet an album at the time).” In some ways, it was the moment when I truly discovered myself as an artist.”
Prior to Lonerism, Parker released his 2010 debut Innerspeaker, as well as a slew of EPs and singles as Tame Impala, including 2008’s bluesy “Half Full Glass of Wine.” He also played drums for the prog-rock band Pond on the side.
I had this new sense of purpose…calling… whatever you want to call it after finishing Innerspeaker. “I’d finally given myself permission to let music completely take over my being… to become completely immersed in my own world of recording music,” he continues. “As a result, I felt a new sense of creative freedom.” I felt free to be ambitious, strange, pop, experimental, or whatever I wanted because I was finally doing it for myself and believed in myself. For the most part, at least.”
Parker admits that he struggled when the album was released into the wild.
His confidence “fell apart,” and he “thought the album sucked and couldn’t imagine people enjoying it.” As it turns out, I was mistaken… The album came out and exceeded all of my expectations, and my life changed dramatically once more, and I gradually realised that the music was actually pretty good, which gave me a new sense of purpose, and the cycle began again.”
