Lizzo, Steve Martin, And Martin Short Have Been Added To The 2022 Emmys Schedule

Lizzo, Steve Martin, and Martin Short are among the new additions to the lineup for the 2022 Emmy Awards, which will air on Monday (Sept. 12). Kenan Thompson will host the show, which will be broadcast live from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

As an executive producer of Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, Lizzo is nominated for Outstanding Competition Program. She has topped the Billboard Hot 100 twice, once with “Truth Hurts” in 2019 and again this year with “About Damn Time.”

Martin is nominated for three awards on Monday night’s show for Only Murders in the Building: outstanding lead actor in a comedy series, outstanding writing for a comedy series, and outstanding comedy series (as an executive producer). Surprisingly, the actor hasn’t received an Emmy nomination since 1969, when he was 23 years old and won for outstanding writing achievement in comedy, variety, or music for his work on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

RuPaul Charles, who won his 12th Emmy last weekend for outstanding host of a reality or competition programme, will compete for his 13th Emmy on Monday as an executive producer of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which is up for outstanding competition programme.

Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live), Shonda Rhimes (Inventing Anna), Jake Lacy (The White Lotus), and Sarah Paulson are among the other celebrities competing for awards on Monday night (American Crime Story).

Lizzo is one of four Hot 100 chart-topping artists who will appear on the show. Kelly Clarkson, who has five Daytime Emmy nominations, and Selena Gomez, who was nominated as an executive producer of Only Murders in the Building on Monday, will also appear. Over the In Memoriam spot, John Legend will perform “Pieces” from his new album, Legend.

Clarkson has three Hot 100 No. 1 singles: “A Moment Like This,” “My Life Would Suck Without You,” and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” With “Love You to Love Me,” Gomez topped the charts in 2019. Legend topped the charts with “All of Me” in 2014.

As previously announced, Zedd will serve as the evening’s DJ, with comedian Sam Jay serving as the announcer. (Zedd has four Hot 100 top 10 hits but has yet to land his first No. 1.)

The 74th Emmy Awards will be directed by Hamish Hamilton, who directed the Super Bowl Halftime Show, which won three Creative Arts Emmys (though none for Hamilton). Done+Dusted will produce the show in collaboration with Hudlin Entertainment. It will air live on NBC from coast to coast on Monday (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/5:00-8:00 p.m. PT) and will also stream live on Peacock.
