Lizzo’s Cover Of Stevie Wonder’s “Someday At Christmas” Brings Holiday Cheer To “SNL”
On December 17, Lizzo brought some holiday cheer to Saturday Night Live.
The pop-rap star filled in for previously announced performers Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who cancelled due to the band’s guitarist Nick Zinner’s continued recovery from pneumonia, as the NBC sketch comedy series’ final musical guest of 2022.
Lizzo transformed the stage into her own personal bedroom for her first performance during the Austin Butler-hosted episode, delivering “Break Up Twice,” a moody track from her latest album, Special, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in July. The performance began with Lizzo rising out of bed to silence a buzzing alarm and ended with the artist belting out the song with the backing of a full band.
Later in the show, the singer-rapper performed a cover of Stevie Wonder’s 1967 holiday classic “Someday at Christmas,” which she released in November as an Amazon Music Original. Lizzo wore a silver and gold gown while passionately delivering the song among several beautifully decorated and lit Christmas trees.
“I chose to cover ‘Someday at Christmas’ not just because it’s a classic, but because it reminds us that almost 60 years later, we’re still fighting for peace, compassion, and equality,” she said previously. “This is a friendly reminder to spread love and kindness during the holiday season.”
Lizzo not only performed as the evening’s musical guest, but she also appeared in the “Please Don’t Destroy Me” skit, in which host Butler is pitched the idea for a plastic clothing line. “I don’t have any planties on,” she says to her boyfriend Martin.
Earlier this year, Lizzo served as both a musical guest and a host on Saturday Night Live. The artist debuted her Special title track and performed her Hot 100 chart-topper “About Damn Time” in between hilarious sketches.
Lizzo’s SNL performances can be seen below. For those without cable, the broadcast is available on Peacock, which you can sign up for here. A Peacock account also grants fans access to previous SNL episodes.
