Monique Coleman Claims That Disney’s Decision To Exclude Her From The ‘High School Musical 3’ Press Tour “Broke My Heart.”
While the Wildcats appeared to be “all in this together,” Monique Coleman wasn’t always convinced.
In the Disney Channel franchise, the star played Taylor McKessie, the astute president of East High’s science club. She recently appeared on Christy Carlson Romano’s latest episode of her Vulnerable podcast. “Disney really broke my heart because when I got to the third movie, I really championed the film in so many ways,” she explained. “I really always spoke so positively, and I was a Black girl playing the smartest girl in school, which was a big deal at the time. And I wasn’t invited to join the tour to promote the third film.”
She explained that “they said something about there not being enough room on the plane,” so she only brought Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Corbin Bleu with her. Lucas Grabeel, who plays Ryan Evans in the trilogy, was also barred from attending.]
“That heartbreak really hit me very hard and did cause a bit of depression because it helped me recognise that I was overly identifying with what I was doing and not with who I was,” she continued. “And that was what led me to take that step and say, ‘Maybe this is my five minutes of fame. Perhaps this is it in some way. And what am I going to do with it if that’s the case?”
