NCT’s Jaehyun Discusses “Sharing My Side As A Human” For Solo Single “Forever Only”
Given K-penchant pop’s for eye-popping visuals and technically flawless performances, Jaehyun made the wise decision to keep things simple for his debut solo single.
The singer-actor is one of the most well-known members of NCT, a 23-member boy band with an ambitious and experimental musical and conceptual framework that includes an infinite number of singers and splinter groups and has charted on the Billboard 200 multiple times. The superband debuted a new project called “NCT Lab” earlier this year to showcase the members’ various skills as songwriters, composers, dancers, and so on. It allowed Jaehyun to connect with the audience in a way that the other performers couldn’t.
Jaehyun contributed significantly to the styling and visuals of the music video for “Forever Only,” all of which serve as vehicles for the singer-songwriter to express his appreciation for understatement. But Jaehyun doesn’t simplify things because he lacks experience; rather, the singer actively seeks to learn the process behind any areas he’s involved in (including music, acting, fashion, hosting, and production) and presents his findings in the simplest way possible.
Jaehyun regards “Forever Only” as the first step in revealing more about himself as a person, but he acknowledges that his entire body of work has played a role in getting him to this point. Continue reading to learn more about the NCT’s main attraction.
Without a doubt, in terms of musical as well as stylistic aesthetics. I also helped with the concept and styling for the music video for this song. As a result, I was eager to demonstrate my genuine personality and aesthetic preferences. My personal style is the casual look that I prefer and that I enjoy wearing. Lyrically, I alluded to a scene depicting lights on a ship sailing through the night, and the music video includes a scene similar to that. It came out fantastically. I tried to be as honest as possible while still conveying emotion.
Given NCT’s lofty musical and conceptual goals, this may come as a surprise to some. Is Jaehyun’s true self finally emerging?
I enjoy pushing myself and trying new things, but I’ve always wanted to discuss the darker side of being an artist. It has always been a goal of mine to show others my human side. I like the idea of beginning with this song.
How much time did you spend on “Forever Only” in total?
I’ve wanted to share the music I’ve been working on for a long time, but the timing wasn’t right. Still, I thought now was a good time to get things going, so I told my team I wanted to release the single right away. “Forever only” is a relatively new phrase. I needed a month or two to prepare when I first heard this.
How do you usually approach making music? What specific steps should be taken?
If you’re like me and prefer peace and quiet, nighttime hours are ideal for getting things done. My usual method is to write the theme first, then the melody. I occasionally collaborate with others, such as producers or pianists, but all I did for “Forever Only” was write the lyrics. Despite the song’s upbeat, bright, and energetic sound and melodies, I felt a little lonely the first time I heard it. When I was in that mood, I wanted the lyrics to reflect my feelings of melancholy and isolation while remaining endearing.
I used to put a lot of effort into my vocals when I first started making music. Toplining, composing melodies, or writing lyrics, on the other hand, is where I feel I gain the most insight into my own tastes, personality, and emotional state. That, I believe, benefits singing as well, so I honed my style by composing music.
