Timed to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8, Netflix unveils a curated collection of new series and films from Africa. The streaming giant aims to spotlight the remarkable achievements of female creators from the region.
Lagos Event: “Her Voice, Our Story”
Leading female figures from the Nigerian film community gather in Lagos for the “Her Voice, Our Story” event on March 6. Organized in collaboration with Mo Abudu of EbonyLife TV, the event celebrates African women in the creative industries. Participants include Netflix Director of Content in Africa Dorothy Ghettuba, and notable creatives Bolanle Austen-Peters, Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, Chichi Nworah, and Peace Hyde.
Diverse Series Lineup
Netflix introduces a diverse range of African shows, including:
- “Baby Farm”: A series exploring the story of Adanna, a young pregnant woman trapped in a sinister baby farm operating under an NGO’s facade.
- “Postcards”: The narrative follows four Nigerians living in India as they grapple with questions of identity and acceptance.
- “House of Ga’a”: A feature film set in the 18th century Oyo Empire, based on the life of Bashorun Ga’a, a powerful Prime Minister and kingmaker.
- “Òlòtūré: The Journey”: Produced by Mo Abudu, the series revolves around a young Nigerian journalist going undercover to expose Nigerian-to-Europe sex trafficking.
- “To Kill a Monkey”: A cybercrime series that adds intrigue to the lineup.
- Continuations: New seasons of popular reality series “Young Famous and African” and YA school drama “Blood and Water.”
