On The Season Finale Of ‘AGT,’ Sara James Performs Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill.’
This year, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” had a chart run unlike any other. Don’t expect to see anything like it again.
“Running,” a 37-year-old throwback, gained new life after appearing in pivotal scenes of Stranger Things season four.
Then strange things began to happen. The song debuted at No. 1 in the United Kingdom, breaking three records and remaining there for three weeks; it also topped the Australian chart for the first time, dominated both Billboard Global charts, cracked the top five on the Hot 100 survey, and Kate Bush ruled the Hot 100 Songwriters Chart for the first time.
The teenage Poland native covered “Running Up That Hill” for her grand final appearance on America’s Got Talent, a song that has clearly had a remarkable life of its own.
James’ update was pared down for effect (save for a power note), with a slapping snare to back it up.
Earlier in the show, James was awarded Simon Cowell’s “Golden Buzzer” for her rendition of Billie Eilish’s “Lovely.”
“We’ve heard a lot of singers over the years,” he exclaimed, “but wow, you have a real star-glow about you.”
With a direct path to the semi-finals, James demonstrated her abilities with a performance of Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” earning standing ovations from all four judges.
America will now vote to determine the winner.
James was one of ten live acts, which also included saxophonist Avery Dixon, country singer Drake Milligan, country trio Chapel Hart, and AI act Metaphysic.
