Panthers Strategically Release Tackle David Sharpe Ahead Of Chicago Clash
CHARLOTTE — In preparation for their upcoming game in Chicago, the Carolina Panthers have strategically opened up a roster spot by parting ways with backup tackle David Sharpe, who has seen action in two games this season.
Background on the Move
Luiji Vilain’s placement on IR triggers the need for a roster adjustment.
The roster move was prompted by the placement of Luiji Vilain on the injured reserve (IR) list earlier in the week. However, due to a rarely enforced rule, the Panthers can’t immediately fill the spot left by Vilain with another player.
Since Vilain was acquired from another team’s practice squad, league regulations mandate that he must spend a minimum of three weeks on the Panthers’ 53-man roster. Despite being on IR now, the team is obligated to account for him for the specified three-week period.
Strategic Decision
Releasing Sharpe allows flexibility for potential additions before the Bears game.
As a strategic move, the Panthers chose to release veteran backup David Sharpe to clear the necessary roster spot. This decision, though technically bringing the roster down to 51 players, aligns with the team’s need for flexibility in case they decide to add a player before the impending game against the Chicago Bears.
