Paul McCartney Has Released A New Essay About The “Magical” Glastonbury 2022 Festival.
Paul McCartney has shared new thoughts on his “magical” experience of headlining Glastonbury 2022, as well as new photos and footage from the event.
The Beatles headlined the first Glastonbury festival in three years on Saturday night, performing a massive, career-spanning set with special guests Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl.
McCartney reflected on the experience in a new BBC piece, sharing new backstage photos from the night as well as footage of his band rehearsing ahead of the set.
“Festivals are special, but Glastonbury is especially so, and it’s a big event in many people’s year,” he wrote. It became more important to pull it off because it had been cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid.
“I’d asked Bruce Springsteen in 2020 if he’d be happy to come onboard and he said yes, and he kept his promise two years later. So having him and Dave Grohl up on stage was very exciting.”

“It’s a pretty impressive scene for people in the audience, but we get the whole view up on the stage with the flags and the hills going back forever, so it was quite a big deal that they said yes to joining me in that experience,” he said of the Glastonbury atmosphere.
“Of course, up on stage I can’t really see people’s reactions but I love to hear them because I’ve found myself doing that at concerts. I went to see James Taylor once and burst into tears because he was so lovely! ‘Oh, I love this guy,’ I thought – I’m getting emotional just thinking about it!
“Knowing music can do that to people is a magical thing,” Macca added. “We are the only animals on the planet that do that.
“Then there’s the spirituality of the place, knowing about the ley lines and all that. I’m very happy to be a part of an event like Glastonbury where everyone comes together with good vibes and energy.”
“There was something that was impressively relentless about the set: it never lagged despite its three-hour run time, while almost every song arrived with psychedelic visuals or, almost unbelievably, pyro,” wrote NME’s Sophie Williams in a round-up of NME writers’ best gigs of the year.
“But the most powerful spectacle of all was the sight of Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen – two prominent Beatles fans – living out their dreams as they performed closer ‘The End’ with McCartney. The trio repeated one word over and over as a flurry of fireworks exploded in the sky above: “Love.” It was everywhere for 180 minutes.”
