Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is currently on a significant humanitarian mission in Ethiopia, where she is focusing on two key causes that are close to her heart. In this article, we delve into her efforts to support women affected by gender-based violence and her work to combat preventable blindness in the region.

Supporting Victims of Gender-Based Violence

Sophie’s visit to Tigray, Ethiopia shines a spotlight on the critical issue of gender-based violence against women, particularly in conflict and war zones. Alongside a UNICEF team, the Duchess is witnessing the devastating effects of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) and gender-based violence.

“The Duchess has championed the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) and stood by survivors of CRSV, bearing witness to their testimonies during her extensive travels,” stated Buckingham Palace in a press release.

Aid for Internally Displaced Persons

Earlier in the week, Sophie paid a visit to Sabacare IDP Camp in northern Ethiopia, a facility caring for over 16,000 Internally Displaced Persons, with a significant number of them being women and girls. At Ayder Hospital’s One Stop Centre for gender-based violence survivors, the Duchess observed the medical and counseling treatments provided to hundreds of women amidst the country’s humanitarian crisis.

Empowering Women Through Education and Skills

Sophie also visited the Women’s Development Centre, an organization dedicated to equipping vulnerable women, many of whom are survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, with the skills needed to lead independent lives and secure employment. During her visit, she actively participated in sewing activities alongside the women and spent time at a child-friendly space in the camp, which provides a safe environment for children to play, learn, and thrive.

Focused on Preventable Blindness

In addition to her efforts against gender-based violence, Sophie’s mission in Ethiopia centers on promoting eyesight health. As the Global Ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), she is celebrating the work of the international eye care charity Orbis in combatting infectious and blinding eye diseases like trachoma.

Hands-On Engagement in Eye Health

During her visit, Sophie is expected to meet specialists, case workers, government representatives, and patients who have regained their sight. She will also visit a school where children are learning how to protect themselves from trachoma through proper face washing and hygiene practices, coinciding with World Sight Day on October 12.

Promoting Elimination of Preventable Blindness

Sophie will participate in a conference where delegates from government, health sectors, and charitable organizations will come together to exchange insights and strategize on eliminating preventable blindness.
