Canada-based Punjabi singer and rapper Shubhneet Singh, known as Shubh, has recently found himself in the midst of a controversy that has not only impacted his career but also strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada. Hailing from Punjab and now residing in Canada, Shubh made a significant mark in the music industry with hit songs like “Elevated,” “OG,” and “Cheques.” His unique blend of hip-hop and trap beats, coupled with his rapid lyrical delivery, quickly garnered him a massive fanbase worldwide.

boAt Withdraws Sponsorship

On September 19, electronics brand boAt decided to retract its sponsorship of Shubh’s upcoming India tour. This decision coincided with a period of heightened tension between India and Canada, fueled by both Shubh’s controversial social media posts and the ongoing diplomatic dispute surrounding the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Shubh’s Controversial Social Media Post

In March of the same year, Shubh sparked outrage when he shared a map of India on his Instagram story, conspicuously excluding the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and the Northeastern states. His caption, “Pray for Punjab,” drew widespread criticism on social media. Although he later removed the map, replacing it with the same caption, the damage had been done.

Cancellation of India Tour

As a consequence of the controversy, Shubh’s India tour, scheduled to take place in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, faced a major setback. Ticketing app BookMyShow announced the tour’s cancellation on September 20.

BJYM’s Opposition

The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, vehemently opposed Shubh’s concert in India, branding him a Khalistani supporter. They launched protests in Mumbai and even called for a ban on his performance. BJYM also requested the Mumbai police to file an FIR against Shubh for allegedly waging war against the Indian government through anti-government posts.

Celebrity Unfollowing

Amidst the controversy, prominent figures like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya unfollowed Shubh on Instagram, signaling their disapproval of his alleged support for Khalistan.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s Death

The controversy surrounding Shubh emerges in the context of India and Canada’s diplomatic tensions over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, suggested a possible link between Indian government agents and Nijjar’s assassination, leading to the expulsion of an Indian diplomat. India dismissed these allegations as baseless and retaliated by expelling a senior Canadian diplomat.
