The Week’s Best New Dance Tracks From Gorgon City, Mau P, And More – First Spin
This week in dance music: we investigated a new app assisting choreographers in receiving payment; Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk announced a forthcoming orchestral album; Detroit’s Movement festival revealed the preliminary lineup for its 2023 event; we spoke with SG Lewis in honour of his new album, which was released today (Jan. 27); and we polled a number of DJs on how they handle their hard-earned money.
Are you prepared for a b-side brawl? The newest single from Gorgon City, “Rumblah,” is identical to the U.K. duo’s 2022 vocal-chop head-knocker “Sidewindah,” but that doesn’t make it any less powerful. Instead, it’s darker and deeper, the kind of music you’d play to a packed house of people in the small hours of the night when raves are at their wildest.
With artists like Meg Ward, t e s t p r e s s, and Flaurese among its roster of recent additions, Monki’s &Friends record label has established itself as a reliable venue for showcasing up-and-coming dance talent in the U.K. since its launch in 2018. With “One More Chance,” Melle Brown of London made her &Friends debut last spring. She then followed that up with “Feel About You,” one of Billboard’s top dance songs of 2022, which features Annie Mac.
“Night Drift,” Brown’s brand-new track, is another in a long line of cosy house treasures. Setting the dark mood with its pounding percussion, buzzing bassline, and strobing synths, it then blossoms into a swirling, smoky dreaminess with Loie’s seductive vocals and glittering piano chords. “Night Drift” has a shift in vibe that makes it feel like finally breaking free of traffic on your own night drive and seeing only open road ahead. It is both cosy and liberating in its search for bright lights and feeling the wind in your hair. Keep driving,” Loie sings. KRYSTAL RODRIGO
The mysterious Juuku, who is buried in shadow in most of his PR shots, adds, “This song to me represents catching a lovely moment of energy at night – one of the very first instances I was introduced to electronic music live.” “The atmosphere, the folks nearby, the kind of environment I was transported into, and how amazing it seemed for the very first time,”
Over a quicktime beat, its vivid and bright synths sing ecstatically. The debut track from Juuku’s upcoming EP Lavender Dreams and Scarlett Nightmares, scheduled for release on Dim Mak, is titled “Moonlight.”
According to him, “This EP… symbolises the two ends of the spectrum that comprise the cosmos I’m making.” “I have synesthesia, which in my situation means that when I listen to music, particularly when I write it, colours can be seen. Either a lavender tone or a crimson tone characterises it (scarlet). This EP is the entry point to the world I refer to as my own, and these two colours stand for the two distinct colours that my music contains.
