USC Pacific Asia Museum Rings In The Year Of The Dragon With Spectacular Lunar New Year Celebration
On Saturday, February 10, the USC Pacific Asia Museum (USC PAM) in Pasadena is set to host its annual Lunar New Year celebration. The event promises a day filled with live performances, art activities, and diverse cultural experiences for families as they welcome the auspicious Year of the Dragon. The celebration, free and open to the public, aligns with USC Pacific Asia Museum’s mission of promoting intercultural understanding.
Symbolism of the Year of the Dragon
Valentina Quezada, Education & Engagement Manager at USC Pacific Asia Museum, highlighted the significance of the Year of the Dragon in Chinese culture. The dragon is revered for its positive qualities such as power, strength, good fortune, and wisdom. The year is anticipated to bring prosperity and advancement to all.
Cultural Diversity and Art Exhibitions
Quezada encourages visitors to explore the museum’s permanent galleries, showcasing various artworks featuring dragons. The special exhibition, ‘Another Beautiful Country,’ coincides with the celebration, offering perspectives from artists who identify as Chinese American or are part of the Chinese diaspora.
Diverse Performances
The Lunar New Year celebration features a lineup of diverse performers representing different cultures that celebrate the occasion. Dance groups from Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, along with the traditional Chinese lion dance, will grace the event. Other performers include opera soprano Shirley Wang, Lan Nartthasin Thai Dance Group LA, and UCLA’s Vietnamese Traditional Dance.
Family-Friendly Activities and Partnerships
To create a fully engaging experience, USC PAM will activate the parking lot and museum courtyard for various activities. Partnerships with Altadena Public Library and Barnsdal Arts will bring special storytime sessions and dragon craft art activities, respectively. USC PAM has taken safety measures, ensuring visitor safety and comfort as a top priority.
