Will Smith Reflects On Oscars’ ‘Horrific Night’: ‘Hurt People Hurt People’
Will Smith’s headline-making moment at the 2022 Oscars in March, when he stormed the stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face, has been eight months.
The incident occurred during the Academy Awards ceremony after Rock made an onstage joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. “I adore you, Jada.” “I can’t wait to see G.I Jane 2,” the comedian said of her shaved head, which is caused by the actress’ alopecia.
The King Richard actor then slapped Rock onstage as he attempted to continue his banter, prompting Smith to yell from his seat, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f—ing mouth!”
While Smith has since apologised on Instagram, he also discussed the incident during an appearance on The Daily Show With Trevor Noah this week, calling it a “horrific night.”
While he added that the moment had “nuances and complexities,” he “lost it” during the ceremony. “And I guess what I’d say is, you just never know what somebody is going through,” he added. “That night, I was going through something. That in no way justifies my behavior.”
Smith observed that there was “a rage that had been bottled for a really long time,” and that the most painful aspect of it all was that “I took my hard and made it difficult for other people.” I understood what they meant when they said, “Hurt people hurt people.” Noah then mentioned how, in Smith’s memoir, the actor revealed that he grew up fearful of conflict.
“It was a lot of things,” Smith responded. “You know, it was the little boy who saw his father beat up his mother. Everything just came to a head at that point. That’s not the person I want to be.”
