With A New Fund, Cyndi Lauper Joins The Fight For Reproductive Justice.
Cyndi Lauper establishes the Girls Just Want To Have Fundamental Rights Fund to aid organisations “fighting for the right to abortion and reproductive healthcare.”
According to a statement on Lauper’s official website, the foundation’s goal is to “support efforts that advance the fundamental rights and health of all women and girls.”
The project has been in the works for a long time for Lauper, who has been vocal about her feminist identity.
“When most women would ask, ‘Are you a feminist?’ And people would say, “Well, I’m a humanist.” ‘Yeah, I’m a feminist,’ I’d say. “I burned my training bra,” Lauper said in a recent People interview. “Then, in 2017, I saw these young girls holding signs that said, ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights,’ and I thought, ‘You know what? ‘It was all worthwhile.’ “They heard me, the little ones.”
Although the fund takes its name from Lauper’s breakthrough 1983 single “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” she admits she did not write the song with political intentions.
“It wasn’t political, but it was in many ways, because how dare I say that women should get together and be joyful?” According to Lauper, “When I was on tour, I saw grandmothers, mothers, and daughters — three generations.” It simply made it worthwhile for me.”
The ’80s hitmaker has 14 Billboard Hot 100 chart entries, including eight top tens and two number ones, “Time After Time” and “True Colors” (“Girls Just Want To Have Fun” peaked at No. 2).
Lauper has won two Grammys (1985, 2014), an Emmy (1995), a Tony (2013), and the Icon Award at the 2018 Billboard Women in Music Awards in 2018.
