Wynonna Judd Opens Up About Her Mother’s Death, Saying She and Sister Ashley “Are So United Right Now”

Wynonna Judd is opening up about her grief after the death of her late mother, Naomi Judd, the other half of the Grammy-winning duo The Judds.

In an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, the country singer discussed her relationship with her mother prior to her mother’s death in April, her experience saying goodbye to Naomi, and the various emotions she’s dealt with since.

“I had no idea she was where she was when she ended it because she had had episodes before and she got better,” the singer recalled. “And that’s what my life is like; was there anything I should have looked for or known?”

Naomi committed suicide on April 30, 1976, just one day before The Judds were to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Wynonna eventually attended the event with her sister, Ashley, by her side. The singer says she has relied on her husband since her mother’s death, but the half-sisters have grown closer as the family — which Wynonna describes as “all very different” — grieves in their own ways.

“We both look at each other as if to say, ‘I’ve got you,’ right?” “And we look at each other and say, ‘Yeah,'” Wynonna said. “I think we’re more united right now than we’ve been in a long time.”

Throughout the interview, the singer discussed the ebb and flow of her relationship with her mother, noting that she has experienced anger while grieving. But, in the end, it’s their love that shines through the most.

“Sometimes I laugh, and other times I say, ‘I miss you.'” ‘Why aren’t you here so we can argue?’ said the singer. “She told me once, taking my hand and saying, ‘My life is better because of you.’ Those are the memories that are beginning to surface more and more.”

“I think a lot of that crap goes away when you lose your mother because it doesn’t matter anymore,” she added.

Wynonna, who continues to make music and tour, says she “has no idea” if performing is “therapy” in any way, but it’s in keeping with her mother’s spirit of perseverance and helps her deal with her grief.

“I believe it is necessary to do it, if that makes sense.” “I feel like I’ve been given marching orders,” she explained. “I want to come out on stage and sing a song from my toes that will help someone in that audience.” It’s about me singing to make someone happy. That is always in my heart.”

Ashley Judd, an actress, has also spoken publicly about her mother’s death, writing in a Sept. 1 essay for the New York Times about how privacy laws surrounding police reports and the initial procedures authorities followed in responding to Naomi’s death have affected her and the family’s grieving process.

The Double Jeopardy star claimed that after discovering her mother, she was interrogated and was once considered a possible suspect in her death. It was a “traumatising” experience for the Judd sibling, who had to share elements of Naomi’s “mental illness and its agonising history” with other family members using “terrible, outdated interview procedures and methods of interacting with family members who are in shock or trauma.”

Ashley added that the family is now facing a potential new media cycle as a result of the release of certain police reports. The actress pointed out that currently undisclosed details about her mother’s death — discovered in toxicology reports and autopsies — can be made public in states after they are closed. This includes Tennessee, the state where her mother died.

In her essay, she argued for changes to state and federal laws that would prevent this information from becoming public. “The raw details are used only to feed a craven gossip economy,” she said, adding that “because we cannot rely on basic human decency, we need laws that will compel that restraint.”
