Lady Gaga promotes abortion and gay marriage in Washington, DC.

I hope and pray that the people of this country will do the right thing, that we will remain united, and that we will not give up until the job is completed. Lady Gaga paused her performance at the ‘Chromatica Ball concert in Washington, DC on Monday (August 8) to express her unwavering support for gay marriage and abortion rights.

It is a reaction to the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that legalized abortion in the United States nationwide. The landmark decision was overturned unanimously on June 24, allowing individual states in the United States to establish their own laws regarding the legality of abortions. Since then, 25 states have passed legislation making it illegal for residents to obtain safe and legal abortions.

Lady Gaga addressed the crowd before performing “Edge of Glory” at Washington’s Nationals Park stadium on Monday night, saying, “I would like to dedicate this song to every woman in America.” To every woman who will be concerned about her physical health if she becomes pregnant. On behalf of all women, I pray that Americans will not be silent, that we will remain united, and that we will not give up until justice is served.

Gaga paused after her lengthy and stripped-down performance to say, “I didn’t mean to be a downer, but there’s some shit that’s more important than show business.”

Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is an unmistakable queer anthem, which she dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community earlier in the set. According to Variety, she said at the beginning of the song, “This might not be the national anthem, but it’s our national anthem!” They should stay out of the way of gay marriage becoming legal in America.

Following the 2015 decision in the landmark case of Obergefell v. Hodges, same-sex marriage became legal in the United States. Following the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, there have been rumblings and vocal support from conservative politicians such as Ted Cruz that the Supreme Court will look to reverse Obergefell v. Hodges next.

Gaga is just one of many celebrities using their platforms to speak out against the potential repeal of Roe v. Wade. When the Supreme Court’s decision was upheld, some of the artists scheduled to perform at Glastonbury 2022, including Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo, Jarvis Cocker, Lorde, IDLES, and Billie Eilish, made public statements in support of abortion rights.

Presenter Janelle Monáe did so during this year’s BET Awards live broadcast; Bridgers, John Oliver, Maya Hawke, Nova Twins, and Arcade Fire have also spoken out in support. Selena Gomez was the only artist to speak out about the issue on the red carpet for a show premiere; the others used social media to express their feelings. The list also includes Jack White, The Chainsmokers, Fiona Apple, Madonna, and Paul Walker’s daughter, in addition to Lily Allen and Sunflower Bean.

Several artists, including Lady Gaga, have used their stage to advocate for abortion rights. Popular artists on the list include Halsey, Lorde, Green Day, and Rage Against the Machine. Bridgers, Paramore, Lizzo, and Lorde, among others, have pledged a portion of their tour proceeds to organizations that help people in North America gain access to safe abortions.

Cyndi Lauper performed “Sally’s Pigeons,” her 1993 abortion rights anthem, and Halsey auctioned off paintings they created on the spot during their performance. Hollywood celebrities such as Busy Philipps (who was arrested at one of these rallies about a month ago) have joined the ranks of those protesting in the streets.

NME’s Nick Levine gave Lady Gaga five stars for her performance on the London leg of her ‘Chromatica Ball’ tour, writing that it “underlines [Gaga’s] unique place in the pop pantheon: the missing link between showstopping ’80s icons like Madonna and Prince, and today’s more open and vulnerable superstars.” NME sent a reporter to the London show.

The Emmy nominations for the 2021 CBS special “One Last Time” were announced earlier this month, and both Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett were among those honored. The next day, Gaga announced that she would reprise her role as Joker’s love interest, Annihilation, opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips’ 2019 film Joker.
