After Being Cast As Fiyero In The ‘Wicked’ Films, Jonathan Bailey Is Ready To Begin ‘Dancing Through Life.’

With his new film role, Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey wants you to stop studying strife and start living the unexamined life.

Director Jon M. Chu officially announced Bailey’s addition to the cast of his long-awaited film adaptation of the smash-hit Broadway musical Wicked on Wednesday (Sept. 21). Bailey will play the male lead Fiyero in the new films, alongside Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda.

Chu confirmed Bailey’s casting in a quote tweet of Variety’s report that Bailey was in talks for the role. “He and they are perfect. They’d be fantastic together. “Born to be forever,” he wrote, referring to a line from Fiyero’s big solo song in the first act of the musical. “I’m too excited to pretend that this hasn’t happened.” We now have a Fiyero!!! #Wicked #JonathanBailey”

Fans may recognise Bailey as Viscount Anthony Bridgerton from Netflix’s steamy regency romance series Bridgerton, but theatregoers will recognise him for his extensive work in musicals. The British actor began his career with the Royal Shakespeare Company at a young age, and he is best known for his roles in the off-West End production of The Last Five Years in 2016, as well as the West End reinvention of Stephen Sondheim’s Company in 2018, for which he won the Olivier Award for best actor in a supporting role in a musical in 2019.

The Wicked film adaptation has been in the works for several years, first being announced in 2016. Chu, who was about to release his critically acclaimed musical-to-film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, was announced as the project’s director in February 2021. Erivo and Grande were announced as the film’s stars in November 2021, followed by Chu’s announcement in April 2022 that the film would be split into two parts.
