At Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert, Them Crooked Vultures Reunite For The First Time In 12 Years
On Saturday, the Crooked Vultures briefly reunited at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium in London (Sept. 3).
The rock supergroup, which included Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, performed together onstage for the first time in more than 12 years to honour the late Foo Fighters drummer, who died in March at the age of 50.
The surprise came after a video tribute from Elton John, who was unable to attend the all-star event due to a scheduling conflict. The rock band, which was joined by guitarist Alain Johannes, launched with a cover of John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” followed by their song “Gunman” and QOTSA’s “Long Slow Goodbye.”
“Technically, we’re still a band,” frontman Dave Grohl told The Guardian at the time. “We practise once every decade, and aren’t we approaching another decade?” I don’t have any official news, but something is always cooking.”
At press time, the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert had already featured a slew of unexpected collaborations, including Liam Gallagher performing Oasis with the Foo Fighters, another surprise reunion from the James Gang, Hawkins’ Chevy Metal and Coattail Riders teaming up with Kesha and Darkness’ Justin Hawkins, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and AC/Brian DC’s Johnson, and many more.
The show began with Grohl, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, and Rami Jafee of the Foo Fighters walking out onstage together, followed by a heartfelt kick-off message from Grohl.
“We’ve gathered here tonight to celebrate the life, music, and love of our dear friend, bandmate, and brother, Taylor Hawkins,” the frontman told the packed house. “We’ve gathered his family and closest friends, musical heroes and greatest influences to bring you a massive f—ing night for a massive f—ing person.” Sing and dance, laugh and cry, scream and make some noise so he can hear us right now.”
The Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert began live at 11:30 a.m. ET/8:30 a.m. PT. The concert is available on Paramount+ in the United States, Pluto TV in the United Kingdom, and MTV’s YouTube channel.
