Brittany Aldean Claims Her Comments on Gender Identity Were “Taken Out of Context” After Backlash
Brittany Aldean, Maren Morris, and Cassadee Pope got into a fight over the weekend after Jason Aldean’s wife posted a transphobic joke on Instagram.
Brittany shared her new merchandise on Instagram on Wednesday (August 31), which reads “Don’t tread on our children” in the classic Barbie font. Billboard has reached out to Mattel for comment on the font. “As usual, my words have been taken out of context over the past week,” she captioned the post. “Rather than getting worked up over the twisting of my words, I’ve decided to turn it into something positive. We will donate to @operationlightshine and support their efforts to combat child exploitation and human trafficking through this launch.”
Transgender people are people whose gender does not match their assigned sex at birth. Gender identity differs from gender expression, for example, being a “tomboy.” “At some point, nearly all children will engage in behaviour associated with different genders – girls will play with trucks, boys will play with dolls, girls will hate wearing dresses and boys will insist on wearing them – and gender nonconforming behaviour does not necessarily indicate gender identity,” according to the Human Rights Campaign, an organisation that provides information and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. These behaviours, however, can sometimes reveal a child’s gender identity, with some toddlers already identifying as the opposite of their assigned gender.
“The general rule for determining whether a child is transgender or non-binary (as opposed to gender nonconforming or gender variant) is whether the child is consistent, insistent, and persistent about their transgender identity,” the HRC adds.
Transgender children in their prepubescent years can frequently initiate a social transition by changing their name and pronouns or adopting an identity-appropriate appearance. It is also legal to change the names and genders on identification documents. Prior to the onset of puberty, transgender children are not offered puberty blockers or hormone treatments, and gender-affirming genital surgery is generally not recommended before the age of 18.
