The Cause Of Death Of ‘Elvis’ Actress Shonka Dukureh Has Been Revealed
Shonka Dukureh, 44, died as a result of natural causes, according to an autopsy. According to a copy of the Davidson County Medical Examiner’s Office report, the gospel singer and former elementary school teacher who stole scenes as Big Mama Thornton in the Baz Luhrmann biopic Elvis died of natural causes due to “hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.”
Dukureh was discovered dead in her Nashville apartment on July 21; no foul play was suspected at the time. The medical examiner ruled her death “natural,” citing high blood pressure and artery thickening caused by plaque buildup as contributing factors. Dukureh made her film debut in the Presley biopic, starring Austin Butler as the rock icon, less than a month before her death. Dukureh was praised for her powerful rendition of “Hound Dog,” the song that helped Elvis become a global icon, which appears on the film’s soundtrack.

Dukureh, a Fisk University graduate and Nashville singer, lived in the apartment with her two young children, according to police. One of the children discovered her unresponsive and went to a neighbor’s apartment, where she dialled 911 shortly before 9:30 a.m. Dukureh performed alongside Doja Cat at this year’s Coachella, where she backed Doja on the Elvis soundtrack original “Vegas,” which interpolates Big Mama Thornton’s 1952 rock building block classic “Hound Dog.”
