Charlie Puth Claims Ellen DeGeneres Ghosted Him ‘They Just Disappeared’ Is The Record Label.
In a new interview published on Saturday, Charlie Puth discussed his experiences with Ellen DeGeneres’ record label (Oct. 8).
In an interview with Rolling Stone Music Now to promote his new album Charlie, the pop singer reflected on being signed to the late-night host’s fledgling (and now-defunct) eleveneleven label in the early 2010s after his cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You” with pal Emily Luther went viral on YouTube.
Greyson Chance recently accused DeGeneres of being “manipulative” and “opportunistic” as a mentor, and Puth compared his situation with DeGeneres’ label to Greyson Chance’s. “I have different experiences than Greyson,” he explained. “But I agree with him that nobody was really present, especially after I made my first, like, demo EP.” After that, I didn’t hear much from anyone. Without pointing fingers at anyone in particular, all of the people in that room simply [makes woosh sound] vanished.
“But even then, I was fortunate enough to [get] a Berklee scholarship, so I was able to fall back on going back to school,” Puth continued. “It was a huge mistake that it didn’t work out, but I returned to Massachusetts and continued my education.”
“People describe Ellen as rude,” the “Charlie Be Quiet!” singer clarified, adding, “I don’t hold any ill will toward Ellen.” That has never happened to me. “Perhaps she likes me.”
Billboard reached out to DeGeneres’ representative for comment.
Charlie, the crooner’s new album, was released on October 7 by Atlantic Records and features the singles “Light Switch,” “That’s Hilarious,” “Left and Right” featuring Jung Kook, “Smells Like Me,” and “I Don’t Think I Like Her.”
