Ha*Ash Discuss Their ‘Most Ambitious’ Tour To Date, As Well As Releasing An Album After Five Years
Hanna and Ashley, the sisters who make up HaAsh, have a lot to be happy about. For starters, HaAsh has reached a milestone of 20 years in the industry, which they are still processing. “We can’t believe it’s been that long,” Ashley says during a Billboard Instagram Live. Then there are their four sold-out shows in Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional, the first of which is tonight (Oct. 21), as part of their Mi Salida Contigo Tour. The duo is also returning to the United States in 2023 with a 22-date tour, and their first album in five years, Haashtag, was released in September.
The Mexican-American sisters have proven chameleonic in the ever-changing landscape of music since launching their career in the early 2000s with their self-titled debut album, which included pop anthems “Odio Amarte” and “Estés En Donde Estés.” “It’s completely different from when we first started. Because the music we make isn’t as popular as other genres, the most difficult challenge has been to stay innovative without losing our essence [as pop artists].”
They’ve embraced new styles in their most recent albums, fusing their core pop sound with urban, country, and regional Mexican sounds for a more contemporary approach to making music. But, unlike most artists, they’ve focused solely on solo work, with only a few collaborations in their 20-year career. In Haashtag, for example, there is only one collaboration, “Mi Salida Contigo” with Kenia Os.
“We’re not actively looking for collaborations,” Hanna says. “Especially with this album because we recorded it during the pandemic, so we didn’t have a lot of contact with a lot of people,” Ashley adds. When we do collaborate, which is rare, it’s because we’re physically present with them and it just happens.”
