Here Are All the Easter Eggs In BLACKPINK’s Music Video For “Shut Down”
BLACKPINK has returned to your area. Two years after their debut album, The Album, the four-piece — Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé — released their second album, Born Pink, on Friday (Sept. 16), along with an Easter egg-filled video for the album’s title track, “Shut Down.”
As it turns out, video Easter eggs aren’t just a Taylor Swift thing (who is, notably, a fan of the girl group). When the video for “Shut Down” dropped early Friday morning, fans noticed that it served as both a reflection on BLACKPINK’s past eras since their 2016 debut with “Whistle,” as well as a fun game for eagle-eyed viewers to decode all the small details and links to the group’s previous video releases, as well as their solo and group discography.
The video for the fiery track began with a nod to the quartet’s 2016 music video “Playing With Fire,” with Lisa standing in a very familiar location at the very beginning of the video. Then, a group shot of Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé in an alley filled with posters gives devoted Blinks plenty to chew on.
Such a detailed video does not happen by chance. Lisa told CR Fashion Book in an interview how deliberate the group aims to be with its final products. “We try to achieve the best results by discussing our thoughts on music videos, outfits, choreography, and even the smallest details like hair colours,” the rapper explained, adding, “I think our fans are as excited about our new album as we are.”
Lisa on Duty
The first scene of “Shut Down” shows Lisa standing on a deck against a darkened sky, with water splashing on the sides. The reference is to her solo moment in “Playing With Fire,” which occurs between 1:21 and 1:50.
Group Automobile Ride
BLACKPINK’s group car ride is led by Lisa. The girls, who are all wearing face coverings with the “Pink Venom” single art, recreate a scene from their 2016 “Whistle” video (1:44-1:48), but Rosé is driving.
Shout-Out to ‘Square Up’ EP
Do you require spare parts? BLACKPINK’s Square Up EP is mentioned in a poster titled “Square Slicers,” which invites curious minds in need of spare parts and repairs.
