Here Are The 2023 Grammy Nominations Categorized Genre-Blending Albums By Beyoncé, Demi Lovato, And Others
The barriers that divide genres are crumbling, which is a good thing in many ways. However, it makes things more difficult for the screening committees that decide where records should compete in the annual Grammy Awards process.
Here are some albums that may have given the screening committees pause – and where they stand in the 65th annual Grammy Awards process.
Dance Fever by Florence + the Machine is up for best alternative music album. Ceremonials and How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, the English indie rock band’s previous albums, were nominated for best pop vocal album.
Zach Bryan’s American Heartbreak topped Billboard’s folk, country, and rock album charts, as well as reaching No. 5 on the Billboard 200 all-genre chart. It’s up for best country album at the Grammys.
Beyoncé’s Renaissance and Lizzo’s Special straddled the line between pop, dance, and R&B. Special is up for the award for best pop vocal album. Renaissance is up for the award for best dance/electronic music album. Beyonce won the Grammy for best contemporary R&B album three times (for Dangerously in Love, B’Day, and I Am…Sasha Fierce) and best urban contemporary album twice (for Lemonade and Everything Is Love, a collaboration with her husband Jay-Z as The Carters).
The distinction between R&B and progressive R&B is frequently hazy. Summer Walker’s Still Over It and Chris Brown’s Breezy were named R&B by the Grammys, but Steve Lacy’s Gemini Rights and Brent Faiyaz’s Wasteland were named progressive R&B.
Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version) is up for best country album honours. The original Red album was nominated for that award nine years ago, but it was defeated by Kacey Musgraves’ Same Trailer, Different Park. Swift has won best country album once (for Fearless) and best pop vocal album once (for 1989). (for 1989).
Jason Aldean’s Macon, Georgia, a compilation of his two single-disc albums Macon (released on November 12, 2021) and Georgia, is up for best country album (released on April 22).
The Encanto soundtrack, which topped the Billboard 200 for nine weeks, is up for best visual media compilation soundtrack, not best pop vocal album.
The four Latin albums that charted in the top ten on the Billboard 200 during the Grammy eligibility year (October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022) are competing in three categories. Un Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny and Legendaddy by Daddy Yankee are competing for best msica urbana album. Formula Volume 3 by Romeo Santos is up for best tropical Latin album. Nostalgia by Eslabon Armando is up for best regional Mexican music album (including Tejano).
Several celebrities did not submit their albums for Grammy consideration for a variety of reasons. An Evening With Silk Sonic was not submitted by Silk Sonic. They probably reasoned (correctly) that they had been amply rewarded last year when they won four Grammys for “Leave the Door Open,” and they would be better off allowing other artists to shine. Nobody wants to be the person who says, “Haven’t they won enough?”
Drake and The Weeknd did not submit Honestly, Nevermind, or Dawn FM. They’re probably still stinging from previous disappointments. Drake, one of the most successful musicians in the last 15 years (and, in fact, in recording history), has only four Grammy nominations. (As previously stated, Silk Sonic alone won that many earlier this year.) The Weeknd was mysteriously overlooked in the year that he released “Blinding Lights,” one of the biggest and most universally admired hits of recent years — despite the fact that he has also won four Grammys.
Meek Mill’s Expensive Pain, Roddy Ricch’s Live Life Fast, Lil Durk’s 7220, Rod Wave’s Beautiful Mind, and Tory Lanez’s Sorry 4 What are among the albums that did not make the cut.
