Here’s Why Chris Rock Turned Down The Offer To Host The Oscars In 2023.
Chris Rock told a Phoenix stand-up show this week that he was approached to host the 2023 Oscars after Will Smith stormed the stage and slapped him across the face.
According to AZ Central, the comedian declined the gig because it would be like returning to the scene of a crime, referring to O.J. Simpson’s murder trial, which began with her ex-wife leaving her mother’s glasses at an Italian restaurant. Returning to the Oscars, Rock said, would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant.”
During the Academy Awards ceremony in March, Rock made an onstage joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, which sparked a tense moment. “I adore you, Jada.” “I can’t wait to see G.I Jane 2,” the comedian said of her shaved head, which, unbeknownst to Rock, is caused by the actress’ alopecia.
Smith laughed, while Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes. Soon after, the King Richard actor stormed the stage to slap Rock, who tried to continue his banter before Smith yelled from his seat, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f—ing mouth!”
Smith apologised for his behaviour in a formal statement posted on his Instagram on March 28; he also resigned from his membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was barred from attending the Oscars and other Academy events for ten years.
Smith apologised again in a video posted to YouTube in July. “I contacted Chris, and the response was that he is not yet ready to speak.” He will reach out when he is ready. Chris, please accept my sincere apologies. “My behaviour was unacceptable, and I am available to speak with you whenever you are ready,” he said.
“I want to apologise to Chris’s mother,” Smith continued. I saw an interview [she] did, and that was one of the things I had overlooked. I wasn’t thinking about how many people were hurt at the time. I want to apologise to Chris’ mother and to Chris’ family, particularly Tony Rock. We had a fantastic friendship. Tony Rock was my go-to guy. This is most likely irreversible. I’ve spent the last three months replaying and comprehending the nuance and complexities of what occurred at that time. I’m not going to try to unpack all of that right now, but I can tell you that no part of me believes that was the appropriate way to act at the time. There is no part of me that believes that is the best way to deal with feelings of disrespect or insult.”
