In the first look at ‘Jeanne du Barry,’ Johnny Depp plays King Louis XV.
The first image of Johnny Depp as King Louis XV, known for his controversial rule, has been released for the upcoming historical romance drama Jeanne du Barry.
The film follows the life of Jeanne du Barry, King Louis XV’s last royal mistress, who rose through the social hierarchy from her working-class roots to become the king’s lover. The film was directed and starred in by Mawenn, a French director who also plays the title character.
Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, Noemie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, and India Hair also star. They join Johnny Depp and Marwenn in the lead roles.
According to Deadline, production on the film Jeanne du Barry began in late July in Paris and the surrounding Île-de-France region. This came after Depp’s defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard concluded in June.
As a result of that trial, Depp was awarded compensatory damages in the amount of $10 million (£8 million), as well as punitive damages in the amount of $5 million. The judge ruled in Heard’s favor on her counterclaim against Depp, awarding her $2 million. Heard filed the necessary paperwork to start the appeal process in July.
This is Johnny Depp’s first major acting role since the release of Minamata in 2020, in which he portrayed war photographer W. Eugene Smith.
Following Depp’s defeat in his libel case against The Sun newspaper, which had described him as a “wife beater,” the studio that was producing the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts in 2020 asked him to step away from the project.
After selling his first art collection, which included celebrity portraits of Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Elizabeth Taylor, and Al Pacino, the actor recently made more than three million pounds.
Following its theatrical run, Jeanne du Barry will reportedly make its Netflix France debut at some point in the future; the exact date of this debut has not yet been determined.
