Lizzo Accepts Her First Emmy For ‘Watch Out For The Big Grrrls’ With Tears
Lizzo was awarded the Outstanding Competition Program Emmy on Monday night (September 12) for her Amazon Prime Video series, Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.
“I’m very emotional,” she said as she accepted her award on stage, standing alongside her Watch Out for the Big Grrrls collaborators. “The trophy is nice, but my feelings are for the people on this stage with me.” Their stories are not particularly original. They simply do not have the platform. “Storytelling, let us tell more stories.”
“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was myself in the news.” “Someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me,” she recalled, before laughing and saying to her younger self, “You’re going to see that person, but b—-, it’s going to be you.”
Lizzo ended her heartfelt, moving speech by addressing the Big Grrrls, who were cheering her on from the audience. Lizzo’s Emmy win is her first nomination and first win at the award show.
The three-time Grammy winner searched among a talented group of plus-sized women of colour for backup dancers for her tour on the Amazon Prime Video reality competition show. “Girls who look like me don’t get representation,” the “Rumors” singer said in the show’s trailer, which debuted in March. “It’s time to roll up my sleeves and look for them myself.”
