Los Enanitos Verdes’ Frontman Marciano Cantero Dead At 62
Marciano Cantero, the prolific Argentine rock band Los Enanitos Verdes’ lead vocalist and bassist, died on Thursday, September 8, just two weeks after his 62nd birthday on August 25.
According to El Tiempo, Cantero (real name Horacio Eduardo Cantero Hernández) was in intensive care on September 5 after undergoing surgery for a kidney infection. The singer also had one of his kidneys and a portion of his spleen removed at the Cuyo Clinic in Mendoza, Argentina, according to the newspaper.
His death was announced on the official Enanitos Verdes Instagram account, which simply posted a black ribbon in mourning. Earlier in the day, the account posted a photo of Cantero with the caption “Today and forever, Marciano” and praying hand emojis.
For “Nectar” and “Traccion Acustica,” the group received two Grammy nominations for best Latin rock/alternative performance. Cantero was enlisted by reggaeton artists J Balvin and Bad Bunny in 2019 for their urban-alternative track “Un Peso,” which appears on their collaborative album Oasis.
On July 6, 2022, Los Enanitos Verdes began a 17-city U.S. tour produced by Frias Entertainment and Live Nation to commemorate their 40-year career. The tour came to an end on August 13 at Orlando’s House of Blues.
Drummers in the lineup included Cantero, Staiti, and Jota Morelli.
