On This Season Of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race,’ Maren Morris Addresses How Country Music Has Treated The LGBTQ+ Community And Says, “I’m Sorry”
For Maren Morris, appearing as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race was the realisation of a “decade-long dream.”
On the evening of Friday, January 13th, the country star tweeted, “I’ve done some cool s—. #DragRace is rivalling it all.” He made an appearance on the show that day. I’m having my jacket framed alongside a photo of my grandma. It has been completed.
After airing an episode of Untucked, Morris gave an emotional speech to the audience, bringing tears to her eyes.
Morris expressed regret for the way country music has treated people who identify as LGBTQ+. And I adore you all for making me feel like a strong figure in the country music industry. For that, I am eternally grateful to all of you.
I’m going to cry,” she said honestly.
Morris demonstrated her support for transgender people in August when she publicly called out Brittany Aldean, the “unapologetically conservative” wife of country singer Jason Aldean, for posting harmful anti-trans propaganda on Instagram. Morris labelled Aldean “Insurrection Barbie” and told her to “not be a scumbag human” after Brittany termed gender-affirming care for youngsters “one of the worst horrors,” and Cassadee Pope echoed this sentiment.
Morris responded to Tucker Carlson’s “lunatic” statements about her by selling “lunatic country music person” T-shirts and donating over $100,000 to GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program and Trans Lifeline.
Morris criticised Candace Cameron Bure in November for saying she wanted to “maintain conventional marriage at the foundation” of the programming on her new network, Great American Family. Morris said, “Make DJ Gay Again,” alluding to Bure’s most well-known character, that of DJ Tanner on Full House.
“Friends are great! In an Instagram post on Saturday, the official Rupaul’s Drag Race account expressed gratitude that “@marenmorris stopped by #Untucked to encourage our Queens with this sweet message” (Jan. 14).
