Rina Sawayama Claims She Received ABBA’s ‘Blessing’ For The ‘This Hell’ Guitar Riff.
Rina Sawayama’s sophomore album Hold the Girl will be released on September 16, and the single “This Hell” features a recognisable guitar riff from ABBA’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).”
In a new interview with BBC, the singer revealed that she received ABBA’s approval for the song. She “freaked out” when she realised the guitar riffs were similar and called her publishers. “They were like, ‘ABBA will definitely say no to this, and you have to change it,'” she recalled.
John knew someone at Universal Music and sent “This Hell” to Sweden with a handwritten note from Sawayama. “‘Look, I love your music,’ I said. I’m willing to divide the publishing. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean for this to happen,” she explained before receiving an approval stamp from ABBA’s Benny Andersson. “No worries. That is perfectly acceptable. “Best wishes,” she said.
“So that song has the blessing of ABBA!” Sawayama concluded.
Sawayama has announced a North American tour for July. The 13-date tour will begin on November 1 in Brooklyn, NY at Avant Gardner and will travel through Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and Arizona before concluding in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palladium.
