The Barbz Enjoyed Nicki Minaj’s 2022 Rolling Loud NYC Headlining Performance.
On Friday, September 23, Nicki Minaj closed out day one of Rolling Loud NYC at Citi Field in Queens, New York, and she brought along a few guests to shake the festival grounds.
Expectations for a big show were high because Nicki was the first female rapper to headline Rolling Loud, and the hometown girl delivered. When the Fashion Nova stage’s lights turned pink, fans scurried across the festival grounds to get a good spot to see the South Jamaica, Queens, native in all her glory. She entered the stage at around 9:15 p.m. with the sounds of yelling fans filling the air in the Big Apple.
The mother of one started the celebration with a fiery performance of “We Go Up,” during which Fivio Foreign unexpectedly appeared on stage and delivered his mesmerising verse. Minaj didn’t waste any time in whipping up the crowd as she treated them to a medley of her hits, including “Did It On’em,” “Beez In The Trap,” “Feeling Myself,” and others.
As the crowd in Citi Field was still reeling from Fivio Foreign’s appearance at the start of the performance, Nicki invited a few more friends to join her onstage to keep the momentum going.
BIA joined Minaj for a powerful performance of “WHOLE LOTTA MONEY (Remix),” and shortly after, Lil Uzi Vert showed up to perform with Nicki in a duet of their moving song, “The Way Life Goes (Remix).”
Once she realised she had the festival-goers in the palm of her hands halfway through the set, Minaj dug even further into her repertoire of hits. The rapper’s 2018 single “Chun-Li” instrumental had fans bursting at the seams, and the Barbz faithful only got louder when their idol performed “Only” and “Truffle Butter” without Chris Brown and her fellow Young Money artists Drake and Lil Wayne. When Nicki performed “Welcome to the Party (Remix)” on the New York drill train, the late Pop Smoke was also given some love.
If the day one fans hadn’t gotten to hear more of the timeless songs that drew them into the Barbz fandom in the early 2010s, it wouldn’t have been a genuine Nicki Minaj performance. The Barbz held it down for the 39-year-old by flawlessly rapping “Up All Night” and “Itty Bitty Piggy” as Nicki left the stage to change into a new outfit. When everyone was rapping and dancing along to Nicki’s songs, she could have given the mic to her fans.
When Minaj invited G Herbo on stage to perform “Chi-Raq,” she had another surprise in store for her devoted fanbase. He arrived to a roaring crowd, especially after he missed his earlier set because of traffic in New York City, which prevented him from getting to Citi Field in time.
The multi-platinum artist started the night’s finale with “Super Bass” from her 2010 debut album, Pink Friday, but there appeared to be a small hiccup with her set and the allotted timeframe festival organisers gave her.
When Nicki said to the audience: “Rolling Loud is not going to let me do ‘Moment 4 Life,'” she paused singing the lyrics to “Super Bass.” But I have to perform it a cappella for my supporters.
The hip-hop artist performed her Drake-assisted song before the crowd took control and closed her set in what was by far the most moving moment of the entire performance. The performance was well-received by the crowd, and many people talked about how Minaj dominated the opening day of Rolling Loud NYC 2022 as they left the venue.
One of the Barbz exclaimed, “She’s just the best,” as they left the festival, and another added, “It’s because she’s the Queen!”
