What Finneas Thinks Distinguishes the Jonas Brothers From The “Traditional Boy Band”
Finneas and Joe Jonas sat down for a discussion for The Hollywood Reporter’s Songwriters Roundtable, during which the Grammy-winning producer made a sweet confession to the Jonas Brothers member.
Finneas then discussed how he collaborated with his sister Billie Eilish to create the fictional boy band 4*TOWN’s “Nobody Like U” for Pixar’s Turning Red. “The preamble was that the working titles of the songs had to accomplish something in relation to the character,” he explained. “So [director] Domee [Shi] would say, ‘This song, “Nobody Like U,” is called The Confidence Booster.'” That was all that was required. It was entertaining to see the characters internalise the lyrics at these points in the story. We did, after all, want them to be three-dimensional.”
When asked what he thought of the song, Jonas, a member of a boy band himself, said, “Jonas Brothers wrote all of those great songs, which are great,” and went on to say that the sibling trio’s songwriting abilities are what distinguishes them from the traditional boy band.
Jonas reacted by complimenting Finneas and turning red. “Well, I like the movie… I believe he crushed it. And I like it. I admire Finneas and his sister, as well as what they’ve accomplished. And, of course, the soundtrack is fantastic. And it did, indeed, bring me back.”
Other roundtable participants included Oscar winner David Byrne, who wrote “This Is a Life” for A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once with Son Lux and Mitski, and Oscar winner Diane Warren, who composed “Applause” for Tell It Like a Woman.
