Áakʼw Rock Indigenous Music Festival: A Celebration Of Indigenous Music In Juneau

The Áak’w Rock Indigenous music festival, touted as the country’s sole Indigenous music festival, is set to kick off in Juneau this Thursday. This event marks a significant return to in-person festivities after it went virtual in 2021. Last year, organizers hosted a side stage fundraiser to keep the spirit alive.

A Global Gathering of Indigenous Performers

For three consecutive days, Indigenous artists from Alaska, the United States, and around the world will grace the stage with their mesmerizing performances. The festival has not only garnered local attention but has also become a beacon of inspiration globally. Qacung Blanchett, a member of the Inuit-soul band Pamyua, shared his thoughts on the festival’s impact.

A Unprecedented Musical Experience

With a career spanning three decades in the music business, Qacung Blanchett expressed his awe, stating, “Thirty years of me being in this scene, in this music business, there’s been nothing like this – ever.”

Stellar Lineup of Headliners

Áakʼw Rock, which debuted virtually in 2021, boasts an impressive lineup of headliners for this year’s edition. Notable acts include Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Halluci Nation, and Ya Tseen. Local talents like Air Jazz and Daniel Firmin will also grace the stage.

Tickets and Venues

Tickets for all three festival days or individual day passes are still available. Performances will be held at Centennial Hall and Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall. Additionally, nightly open jam sessions will captivate audiences at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center from 7 to 9 p.m.

Youth Engagement

The festival organizers are keen on involving the youth in the celebration. A free youth jam session will take place at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall on Wednesday, open to youngsters aged 13 to 20. Moreover, adults holding festival tickets can bring one child aged nine or younger.
